Your own cloud, your own rules! Total success at the Self-Hosting workshop and a BOMBSHELL news ☁️🚀

We’ve done it again! On February 27th, Seminari A (QC/0011) was filled with laptops, Linux terminals, and a strong desire to reclaim digital sovereignty. In our second IEEE Student Branch UAB event, we set a challenge: that no one would leave the room depending on third-party subscriptions for their data.

And boy, did we succeed.

From others’ “Cloud” to YOUR own cloud

The workshop was 100% practical. After a brief introduction on why self-hosting is the future of privacy, we got straight to work with the configuration:

  1. CasaOS: We installed this incredible dashboard that turns a Linux server into a simple and intuitive interface. Goodbye to complex command lines to manage apps!
  2. NetBird: We configured Zero Trust networks. We learned how to connect to our servers from anywhere in the world securely, without opening ports on the router and without exposing our data to the internet.
  3. Debian in action: It was great to see everyone with their Debian 12 and 13 virtual machines ready for combat.

BOMBSHELL NEWS: We are now also a Google Developer Group on Campus (GDGoC)! 💥

During the event, we dropped the exclusive: IEEE UAB is growing. Besides being the IEEE student branch, we are now officially a Google Developer Group on Campus (GDGoC). What does this mean for you?

  • More resources and support from Google Developers.
  • Access to technologies like Firebase, Flutter, Google Cloud, and Android.
  • Joint events and an even larger global network of developers.

From now on, the best of both worlds (IEEE + GDGoC) joins forces at the School of Engineering!

The numbers don’t lie (and they keep going up!)

We are amazed by the community’s response:

  • 35 registrations and a real attendance of 30 people. We almost doubled the participation of our first event!
  • A satisfaction rating of 4.83 out of 5 ⭐. Your feedback is what motivates us to keep organizing these events.
  • A high level of technical questions and incredible collaboration between peers.

What’s next?

If you liked this event, get ready. With the new alliance with GDGoC, the 2026 Roadmap becomes even more interesting:

  • Google Tech: Workshops on app development and cloud services.
  • Hardware Real: We are still working on bringing the soldering and PCB design kits you asked for.
  • Networking: More visits and direct contact with the professional world.
