We keep going strong! Last March 26th, we had the immense pleasure of participating in MEMEnginy, the UAB Engineering School’s flagship tech and job fair. To rise to such a special occasion, we decided to bring in an exceptional guest to deliver a workshop that left no one indifferent.

A top-tier expert: Joan León
We had the privilege of hosting Joan León, Web Performance Artisan, Google Developer Expert (GDE) in Web Technologies, and Cloudinary Ambassador. Joan is a leading figure with a career dedicated to optimizing User Experience (UX), specializing in helping companies generate real business impact by improving their web performance.
Besides being a highly active voice in the frontend community through his channel @nucliweb, his workshops, and his personal blog (joanleon.dev), he is currently spearheading the exploration of AI-based tools to automate web auditing processes. He left us with a reflection that perfectly sums up his philosophy:

“I believe that speed is not just a metric, but a way to improve people’s experience and make projects grow on the web.”
Hands-on: Building deterministic agents
The workshop was a total deep dive. During the talk, Joan provided us with a document full of valuable resources to start creating our own deterministic agents.
- Fundamentals and Efficiency: He started by focusing on several key concepts we must keep in mind to develop these agents and make them as efficient as possible, reviewing metrics like LCP, INP, and CLS.
- Resource Optimization: He detailed the importance of properly managing memory, highlighting the vital need to minimize network connection usage.
- Architecture and Programming: Later, we moved on to the code. He presented a general architecture for building these agents and explained how to properly use AI so it responds appropriately to questions, meeting the desired goals.
- The Power of Skills: He put a special emphasis on the use of skills, teaching us step-by-step how to download and use them effectively in our projects.

The day in numbers 📊
The feedback keeps showing us we are on the right track:
- 20 attendees: A very enriching environment where both students and professors from the School shared space and ideas.
- 4.6 out of 5 ⭐: An excellent rating that confirms the top-notch technical level and practical value Joan brought to our community.
What’s next?
Participating in MEMEnginy alongside a professional of Joan León’s caliber shows that the IEEE + GDGoC UAB alliance keeps raising the bar. This mix of web development, performance, and Artificial Intelligence is exactly the kind of content we want to keep bringing to the faculty.
If you missed it, don’t worry! We are already cooking up the next events of the semester. Sign up to be a member for free and follow us on Instagram, @ieee_uab, so you don’t miss your spot in the upcoming workshops.
See you at the next event!
